Epoxy Priming

About Epoxy

Epoxy is a cured resin which is formed by the mixture of two polymer substances that react together to create a new substance. They are used in a number of different applications, among the most common of which is for metal finishing. Epoxies are valued for their remarkable hardness and durability, as well as for the fact that they form powerful bonds to the surfaces to which they are applied. Furthermore, epoxies tend to be more resistant to heat and flame when compared with solvent-based coatings. Epoxy coatings additionally supply powerful chemical resistance and protection against solvents, acids and abrasion. They are, however, more vulnerable to damage caused by UV exposure, a defect that can be compensated for with the application of a UV-resistant paint.

Uses for Epoxy Primers

Epoxy primers are commonly used when a project calls for a metal finishing that will stand up to extreme conditions of heat, chemical exposure and the elements. For example, they are frequently applied in industrial settings, in power plants, on steel tanks and on pipelines. Another typical use of epoxy primers is in marine finishes, such as on the hull of a vessel, on bridge structural elements, and on other types of metal structures located on the docks or by the shoreline. Epoxy bonds well to steel, aluminum and cast iron surfaces. One of the chief advantages of epoxy primers is that they are associated with relatively low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC), meaning that they are an environmentally friendly option for metal finishing.
