Jitterbug & Hand Preparation

Special Prep Work for Architectural Metal Finishing Projects

When you bring your architectural metal finishing job to Certified Enameling, Inc., you can have confidence that your project is in good hands. While we are known for our industry-leading turnaround time of two to three days, we do not make compromises in terms of quality. On the contrary, we take the time with every job to perform special preparatory work by hand to ensure that we are able to achieve the best possible results for our customers.

Our highly trained crews take every necessary step to see to it that we meet or exceed the manufacturer specifications for preparation of surfaces prior to the application of any of the metal finishing products that we use. We do this because proper hand prep work can go a long way toward creating a powerful and long-lasting bond between the coating material and the substrate. When the surface is free from dirt, oil and other foreign objects, the coating is more capable of sticking to the surface and less likely to chip, flake or peel.

It often occurs that the items we receive from our customers are not in the best shape, whether they are coming direct from the manufacturer or are being sent in from the field after having already been in use. The metal may be dirty, corroded or rusted, and a close inspection will typically reveal blemishes and defects in the surface. Our prep work can serve to remove imperfections and get rid of loose mill scale, rust, paint and other foreign matter on the surface of the object.

Orbital Sander Finishing to Improve Coating Bonding

Preparatory work may include sand blasting and the use of solvents, but we also employ hand preparation techniques including sanding and using an orbital sander. The orbital sander creates a "wiggle" pattern that is also known as a jitterbug finish. Rotating at a rate of several thousand times per minute, while also lifting off the surface at the edges, the jitterbug sander leaves a random pattern of semicircles in the surface.

Using an orbital sander, our technicians can leave the surface in a condition that is far more likely to form a powerful bond with the coating material. This is due to the fact that orbital sanding can greatly increase the exposed surface area on the metal object. Each side of the tiny grooves left by the sander forms a surface, with the result that there is significantly more surface area on the same object as compared to the surface area of the object prior to sanding. Jitterbug and hand preparation are only two examples of the steps that we take to achieve the best possible results for our customers.
